Fan the flame of God’s gift

In this season of Advent, we remember the coming of Christ—His first arrival as a child and the promise of His return as King. This is a season of reflection, hope, and expectation. But it is also a season of action—a time to rekindle the fire of God’s purpose within us and fan the flame of God’s gift.

When the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in Matthew 1:20-21, he said: “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” In the same way, the Holy Spirit has planted a purpose, a calling, and gifts within you. Like Joseph, we must reject fear and embrace what God has conceived in us.

The Apostle Paul’s words to Timothy provide an urgent reminder: “I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you… For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and of love and of sound judgment” (2 Timothy 1:6-7 AMP). Paul recognized that fear and intimidation can weaken even the strongest believers, reducing their passion to mere embers. But he also knew the truth: God’s power and presence are always available to stir the fire within us.

Do Not Let the Flame Die

There are seasons in life when the flame of God’s calling feels weak—times when fear, weariness, and discouragement threaten to silence the gifts God has placed in us. Perhaps you feel like the embers of your faith are barely glowing. But hear this: The fire is not gone. It only needs to be stirred.

Paul’s instruction to “fan into flame” is both a command and a promise. You have a role to play in reviving the fire within you. Like a flame that requires oxygen and fuel, the gifts of God need to be nurtured with prayer, time in His Word, and faith-filled action. Advent calls us to this very work: to prepare our hearts, renew our strength, and reignite our passion for His purpose.

God’s Work in You Mirrors His Advent Promise

Advent teaches us that God works in ways we do not always see or understand. The child conceived in Mary was not an ordinary child, and the work He does within you is not ordinary either. As the angel declared, “Do not be afraid… for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” In the same way, what God has begun in you is of Him.

God has given you gifts to share with the world, a light to shine in dark places. Jesus Himself says, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14 AMP). Your gifts are not small, and your calling is not insignificant. This world needs what God has placed within you.

Practical Steps to Fan the Flame

1. Return to the Word of God

God’s Word is the fuel for your spiritual fire. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105 AMP). Spend time daily in Scripture, allowing His truth to renew your mind and ignite your faith.

2. Pray and Invite the Holy Spirit to Move

The Holy Spirit is the fire within you. Just as He filled the early church with boldness and power, He is ready to refresh and empower you. “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord of hosts (Zechariah 4:6 AMP).

3. Reject Fear and Discouragement

Fear is the enemy’s tool to silence your calling. Yet God has declared, “The righteous are bold as a lion” (Proverbs 28:1 AMP). Refuse to let intimidation steal your purpose. Declare His promises and walk in His strength.

4. Share Your Light with Others

The gifts God has given you are meant to bless others and glorify Him. Jesus calls us to action: “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16 AMP).

A Call to Action

Beloved, now is not the time to let your fire grow cold. The same Spirit who spoke to Joseph, who empowered Mary, and who filled Timothy with boldness, dwells within you. Fan into flame the gift of God. Blow upon the embers of your faith with prayer, surrender, and obedience. God has placed His light within you—do not let fear or weariness diminish it.

The Advent message is one of hope and preparation. Christ has come to bring life, light, and salvation, and He has called you to carry that light to the world. The gifts He has placed in you are not for you alone; they are for a world desperate for His truth and love.

A Prayer to Fan the Flame

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gifts You have placed within me. Forgive me for the times I have allowed fear, doubt, or discouragement to weaken my passion for Your purpose. I ask You now to fan into flame the gifts You have given me. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and empower me to walk boldly in Your calling. Let my life shine brightly for Your glory, reflecting the hope of Christ to those around me.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

A Decree for Advent

We decree that the gifts of God within us are stirred afresh. Fear is broken, boldness arises, and the fire of the Holy Spirit burns brightly in us.

This Advent, fan the flame. Christ has come, and He is coming again. Let your life burn for Him.

Grace of the Plumb

“For who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. They are the eyes of the LORD, which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.” — Zechariah 4:10 (AMP)

Beloved, the Lord teaches us not to scorn small beginnings, for what seems insignificant in human eyes is often the foundation of His greatest works. Zerubbabel’s temple, modest compared to Solomon’s, began with a single plumb line in his hand. Yet, this was no ordinary moment—it was the fulfillment of divine purpose and the grace of the plumb. The “seven eyes of the LORD” represent His perfect wisdom and vigilant care, watching over every step of the process. God rejoices in the faithful work of His servants, no matter how small, because every act of obedience moves His plan forward.

The plumb line, a tool for alignment and accuracy, reflects the Lord’s commitment to precision and righteousness in His work. The construction of Zerubbabel’s temple serves as a profound image of God’s spiritual work in His people. Just as the plumb line ensures a building’s integrity, so does God’s Word and Spirit align our lives with His holiness. “I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plummet,” says the Lord (Isaiah 28:17, AMP). Anything that is misaligned must be corrected, for the temple of the Lord must be perfect and unshakable by the grace of the plumb.

Consider this: the “day of small things” is not a day of insignificance, but of preparation. When the people saw the beginning of the temple, they lamented its simplicity, forgetting that the Lord often uses what is small to confound the mighty. He chose David, the youngest of his brothers, to slay the giant. He took a small band of disciples to change the world. “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong” (1 Corinthians 1:27, AMP). The plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand is a symbol of this divine paradox: what starts small in the hands of man is mighty when guided by the hand of God.

The seven eyes of the Lord, scanning to and fro throughout the earth, remind us of His sovereignty and omnipresence. Nothing escapes His gaze; every stone, every line, every effort is seen and judged by Him. This is both a comfort and a challenge, for He rejoices in faithfulness but removes anything unworthy of His temple. “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He repeatedly prunes so that it will bear more fruit” (John 15:2, AMP). The pruning and alignment may be painful, but they are necessary for the completion of His work.

Jesus, the true Master Builder, is the fulfillment of Zerubbabel’s work. He is the cornerstone, chosen and precious, upon whom the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord (1 Peter 2:6, Ephesians 2:20-21, AMP). He holds the plumb line of righteousness in His hand, and He will not rest until the capstone is laid with shouts of grace and glory. The grace of the plumb is evident in His work. The Lord’s pleasure prospers in His hand, and He will not fail (Isaiah 53:10).

Let this truth encourage your heart: the work He has begun in you, though it may seem small, is being carefully constructed by His wisdom and power. He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6, AMP). Trust in His process. Submit to His plumb line, and rejoice in the grace of the plumb, for His hand will bring all things into perfect alignment.

O Lord Jesus, the true Builder and Redeemer, we praise You for Your faithfulness to complete what You have started. Align our hearts and lives with Your righteousness, remove what is misaligned, and strengthen us to trust in Your perfect timing. May we see Your work rise in glory, as every stone is set in place to reflect Your majesty. Amen.

Winds of Change: God’s Unstoppable Purpose

This morning, as we look upon the signs left by last night’s powerful wind—the scattered branches, the rearranged furniture, the sense of movement and change—let us recognize a message from God. The Holy Spirit is stirring, calling us to awaken, to realign with His purpose, and to press deeper into His presence. Just as the wind cannot be controlled, neither can His mighty will be stopped. “For the Lord of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back?” (Isaiah 14:27). His will stands firm, and He is calling us to stand with Him.

Today, as the Spirit moves, remember that His purpose for us was set long before we drew breath. “He made known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Christ… to bring all things together in Christ.” (Ephesians 1:9-10, AMP). Even when we cannot see the full picture, we know that in His hands all things are brought together. His plans are sure, and they will come to pass.

“The land trembles and writhes in pain, for every purpose of the Lord shall be performed.” (Jeremiah 51:29). We live in a world that feels the pangs of change, that longs for healing, and that groans for the fulfillment of God’s promises. Yet we know that His purpose is sure, that nothing can hinder His plan. And as the Word reminds us, “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8). Christ’s victory is complete; we are called to walk in it, to live as a people of light, empowered to stand against darkness and to bring hope to those around us.

As God called Paul, He calls each of us to rise and take our place. “But rise and stand upon your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and as a witness.” (Acts 26:16). Today, the Spirit invites us to respond, to step forward, to press into Him, and to let His will be done in us.

Let us pray:

Our Father and our God, we come before You today humbled by the mighty power of Your Spirit. Just as the wind swept through the night, stirring all that it touched, we ask that You would stir our hearts this morning. Lord, awaken us to Your purpose. Draw us close to You and empower us to stand firm in Your will.

We thank You, Lord, that Your hand is stretched out and no one can turn it back. We trust in Your perfect will and in the plans You have set from the beginning. As we face uncertainty, let our hearts be anchored in the knowledge that You are in control. Help us to walk boldly in the purpose for which You have called us, to be lights in a dark world, and to witness to Your love and truth.

Father, we ask for Your strength to rise up, to press into You, to align with Your Spirit. Let us be filled with Your love and empowered by Your Spirit to bring Your kingdom here on earth. We pray this in the precious and mighty name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen.
