Dependence and Thanksgiving

“Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him], giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” – Colossians 3:17 (AMP)

The Christian life is one of absolute dependence on God. Without Him, we can do nothing. Jesus made this truth plain when He said, “I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit, for [otherwise] apart from Me [that is, cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing” (John 15:5 AMP). Just as a branch cannot survive or bear fruit apart from the vine, we cannot live, thrive, or fulfill our God-given purpose apart from Jesus Christ.

Yet, as we depend on Him, the Word also calls us to a life of gratitude. Thanksgiving is not just an expression of appreciation but a recognition of God’s sovereign hand in all things. From the Old Testament to the New, the Scriptures anchor us in this dual calling: to rely on God fully and to give thanks always.

Dependence on God: Our Only Source of Strength

The Scriptures consistently teach that human strength and effort alone are insufficient. We are commanded to lean on God and not on our understanding.

• “Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding” (Proverbs 3:5 AMP).

• “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the rock and strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26 AMP).

Dependence on God is not a sign of weakness but an act of faith. It is an acknowledgment that “the Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts [with unwavering confidence] in Him, and I am helped” (Psalm 28:7 AMP). Everything we do—whether speaking, acting, or thinking—must be done in His power, for His glory, and in submission to His will.

Thankfulness: A Command Rooted in God’s Character

The Bible is clear: we are to give thanks in all things and at all times. This is not a suggestion but a command.

• “In every situation [no matter what the circumstances] be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 AMP).

• “Let us come before His presence with a song of thanksgiving; let us shout joyfully to Him with songs” (Psalm 95:2 AMP).

Thankfulness is not dependent on our circumstances but on God’s unchanging character. He is good, faithful, and merciful. As Psalm 107:1 declares, “O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His lovingkindness endures forever!”

Thanking Him in Every Season

The Bible is filled with examples of people giving thanks to God in every season of life:

• In victory – David proclaimed, “Therefore I will give thanks and praise You, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises to Your name” (Psalm 18:49 AMP).

• In trials – Job declared, “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21 AMP).

• In worship – Paul wrote, “Through Him [therefore] let us at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge and confess and glorify His name” (Hebrews 13:15 AMP).

Even in the heavenly realms, thanksgiving is central to worship. Revelation 4:9 describes how the living creatures in heaven “give glory and honor and thanksgiving to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever.”

Why We Depend on Him and Thank Him

1. He is the Source of All Good Things – “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer]” (James 1:17 AMP).

2. His Mercy Endures Forever – “For the Lord is good; His mercy and lovingkindness are everlasting, His faithfulness [endures] to all generations” (Psalm 100:5 AMP).

3. He Fulfills His Promises – “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us” (2 Corinthians 1:20 NKJV).

Practical Steps to Depend on and Thank God

• Pray without ceasing – “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (Colossians 4:2 NIV).

• Offer sacrifices of thanksgiving – “He who offers a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving honors Me” (Psalm 50:23 AMP).

• Live with gratitude daily – “And whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him], giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17 AMP).

A Life Anchored in the Word

Dependence on God and thanksgiving to Him are not isolated practices; they are intertwined, creating a life anchored in His Word. As we press into Him daily, we recognize our complete need for Him and grow in gratitude for His unchanging love and provision.

A Prayer of Dependence and Thanksgiving

Heavenly Father, we come to You with hearts full of gratitude, acknowledging that without You, we can do nothing. Thank You for being our strength, our shield, and our source of life. Teach us to lean on You fully and to trust in Your faithfulness in every circumstance. Help us to live each day in gratitude, recognizing Your goodness and mercy that endure forever. May we honor You in all we say and do, offering our lives as living sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

Holy Longing and Divine Encounter

At an unexpected time, a vision appeared before me, vivid and overwhelming, as if reality itself had given way to the unseen realm. I stood in a vast assembly, surrounded by believers who had gathered with one purpose—to seek the face of God. The air was thick with anticipation, a fragrance of sweet incense rising from the altar, mingling with the aroma of fresh anointing oil that began to flow freely, golden and fragrant, a symbol of the Spirit’s unrestrained presence.

As I breathed in, the scent of oil and incense filled my lungs, and I could feel the warmth of the fire burning deep within my chest. The atmosphere was alive with the sound of many voices, lifted in worship, but not the familiar songs of routine. These were new songs, birthed in the moment, raw and unfiltered, as if each word was being drawn directly from the wells of living water within their souls (John 7:38). The melodies intertwined with the wind that began to stir—soft at first, like a whisper through the trees, then building into a mighty rushing force that caused the very walls to tremble (Acts 2:2).

The ground beneath my feet shook, and I could feel the vibrations moving up through my legs, reverberating in my bones. It was as though the earth itself was responding to the presence of the Almighty. Suddenly, the wind became a torrent, swirling around the assembly, and with it came a fire—holy and fierce, yet not consuming. It descended from above, resting upon each head like tongues of flame, and with the fire came a heat that penetrated to the very core, igniting hearts with a passion that could not be quenched (Acts 2:3).

In the midst of this encounter with the Lord, I looked and saw those who had lived their entire Christian lives in the familiarity of routine, their eyes opening wide in astonishment. They had come expecting the usual—a service they could sleep through, a sermon they could predict, a worship they could endure. But now, they were confronted with the reality of a God who could not be contained by their expectations. The air around them shimmered with the weight of glory, so thick it felt like the very breath of God was filling their lungs.

As I continued to behold the scene, I saw twenty-four elders seated on thrones, clothed in white robes, with crowns of gold upon their heads. Their faces were filled with awe and reverence as they cast their crowns before the throne, crying out, “Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they existed and were created” (Revelation 4:10–11). Their voices joined with the sound of the cherubim and seraphim, who flew back and forth with wings covering their faces, crying out with voices that shook the heavens, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 4:8).

The presence of the elders added to the solemnity of the moment, their worship serving as an example to the gathered assembly. The ground continued to tremble beneath their feet, and the room filled with a thick, fragrant smoke—like the smoke of incense rising before the throne of God. It obscured my vision, yet I could feel the nearness of the Lord, so close it was as if I could reach out and touch Him. The smoke carried with it the scent of burning coals, and I saw them—glowing, fiery coals being brought forth by an angel, who touched them to the lips of the people, purifying them, setting their words on fire with the holiness of God (Isaiah 6:6–7).

The heat of the coals seared through my senses, a holy pain that was at once cleansing and empowering. I felt the fire of God settle upon my heart, burning away every impurity, every doubt, leaving only a desperate hunger for more of Him. The wind of God filled my sails, propelling me forward into the depths of His presence, where time and space no longer mattered, only the reality of the living God who was making Himself known.

And then the Lord spoke, His voice like the sound of many waters, filling the place with a reverberation that shook the very foundations. “Behold, I am coming soon. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). The words were a promise, a call to awaken from the slumber of routine, to taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8).

As the vision faded, I was left with an insatiable longing—a longing for the real Jesus, the One who cannot be confined by tradition or expectation, the One whose glory fills the temple, whose fire consumes every heart, whose wind carries us into the uncharted territories of His presence. And I knew, with a certainty that could not be shaken, that I needed this God more today than I did yesterday, and I would need Him even more tomorrow. For in this holy encounter, I had tasted the goodness of the Lord, and nothing else would ever satisfy.

A Call to the Lord

Oh, Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come, I call upon Your name. We stand before You, longing to see Your face, to experience Your unrestrained presence. Shake us from the slumber of routine, break through the walls of our expectations, and let Your glory fill our lives like never before. Let Your holy fire rest upon us, purifying our hearts, and let Your wind propel us into the depths of Your love and truth. We hunger and thirst for righteousness, knowing that only You can satisfy the longing of our souls.

Father, I pray that Your Spirit would flow freely among us, that the oil of Your anointing would pour over us, and that we would not settle for anything less than the fullness of Your presence. Fill us with the unexplainable glory of Your majesty, and let the cry of the seraphim and the worship of the elders be the cry of our hearts: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.” We need You, Lord, more today than we did yesterday, and we will need You even more tomorrow. Draw us closer to You, and let our lives be a testimony of Your unfathomable goodness.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and King, we pray. Amen.

    Ezekiel 36:26 (AMP) “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
  • For the fields are ripe for harvest / And the workers now arise:
    Matthew 9:37–38 (AMP) “Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is [indeed] plentiful, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.’”
    John 4:35 (AMP) “Do you not say, ‘It is still four months until the harvest comes?’ Look, I say to you, raise your eyes and look at the fields and see, they are white for harvest.”
  • In this end-time holy revival / We will see our Savior’s prize:
    James 5:7–8 (AMP) “So wait patiently, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits expectantly for the precious harvest from the land, being patient about it until it receives the early and late rains. You too, be patient; strengthen your hearts [keep them energized and firmly committed to God], because the coming of the Lord is near.”
    Revelation 7:9–10 (AMP) “After these things I looked, and this is what I saw: a vast multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all the tribes and peoples and languages of the earth, standing before the throne and before the Lamb (Christ), dressed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands; and in a loud voice they cried out, saying, ‘Salvation [belongs] to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb [our salvation is the Trinity’s to give, and to God the Trinity we owe our deliverance].’”

Verse 7: The Return of Jesus

  • Soon He’ll come in clouds of glory / With a trumpet loud and clear:
    1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 (AMP) “For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of the archangel and with the blast of the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain [on the earth] will simultaneously be caught up (raptured) together with them [the resurrected ones] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord!”
    Revelation 1:7 (AMP) “Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him [realizing their sin and guilt, and anticipating the coming wrath]. So it is to be. Amen.”
  • Every knee will bow before Him / Every heart will lose its fear:
    Philippians 2:10–11 (AMP) “so that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow [in submission], of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess and openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord (sovereign God), to the glory of God the Father.”
    Revelation 21:4 (AMP) “and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be death; there will no longer be sorrow and anguish, or crying, or pain; for the former order of things has passed away.”
  • For the King of all creation / Will return to claim His own:
    Matthew 24:30–31 (AMP) “And at that time the sign of the Son of Man [coming] in the clouds will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth [and especially Israel] will mourn [regretting their rebellion and rejection of the Messiah], and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory [in brilliance and splendor]. And He will send His angels with a loud trumpet and they will gather together His elect (God’s chosen ones) from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.”
    Revelation 22:12 (AMP) “‘Behold, I (Jesus) am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one [according to] the merit of his deeds (earthly works, faithfulness).’”
  • And in this, our final victory / We’ll be welcomed to His throne:
    1 Corinthians 15:54–57 (AMP) “And when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the Scripture will be fulfilled that says, ‘Death is swallowed up in victory (vanquished forever). O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin [by which it brings death] is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory [as conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
    Revelation 3:21 (AMP) “He who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God], I will grant to him [the privilege] to sit beside Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down beside My Father on His throne.”
